Close your eyes for a moment.
Imagine your hands wrapped around a warm cup.
The cacao is dark and earthy…rich in a way that feels ancient, like something your body recognizes even if your mind doesn't quite know why. You bring it to your lips and take the first sip. Something in your body shifts. Not dramatically...simply a softening. Like a door you didn't even know was closed has quietly come open.
Your shoulders drop. Your jaw unclenches. Your breath, perhaps for the first time in a while, fills your lungs with ease...without tension. Your whole body begins to relax.
There is no agenda here. No performance. No one waiting for you to say the right thing or be the right version of yourself. No one demanding anything of you. Just this circle. These people. This beautiful medicine. And the quiet, profound sensation of being exactly where you're supposed to be.
This is Cacao Medicine. She doesn't take you somewhere else — she brings you back. Back into your body. Back into your senses. Back into the wild, alive, intelligent being that you actually are underneath all the noise.
Some people feel a warmth rising in their chest like something long-held is finally being released. Some feel tears, not from sadness, but from relief. From recognition. From the strange, gorgeous experience of being seen, including by yourself.
Some feel joy. Real joy. Not the performed kind. The kind your body knows before your mind can catch up and edit what you are truly feeling.
Some people feel, maybe even for the first time in a very long time, at home.
There is a reason the Indigenous women who have worked with this medicine for generations say that their blood is made of cacao. There is a reason she has been called heart medicine for thousands of years. She is not just a plant. She is a spirit. She is awake and alive and she has a way of awakening that same aliveness in you.
When I work with cacao — even just preparing her, holding her in my hands — my awareness shifts. My senses sharpen. I can almost smell wet soil, rushing rivers, ancient forests. I feel connected to something so much larger than my day-to-day, my to-do list, my worries. I remember how trees and mycelium communicate underground. I remember how connected everything actually is. How connected we all really are.
The plants have always known this. They hold more wisdom than we can possibly imagine.
This ceremony is an invitation to remember this too.
A Note for You
Not just physically tired, but yes, probably that too. I am speaking to that deeper kind of tired. The kind that comes from constantly being on. From constantly showing up, performing, managing, pushing through. From carrying a lot and not really having anywhere to put it down. It's a kind of soul tired.
And here's what I also know: your body has been trying to tell you something about all of it and for a long time, probably. It's been sending you signals through tension, through fatigue, through that vague sense that something just isn't quite right. But you were never taught to listen to it that way.
It isn't your fault. It's what most of us were taught to do in our culture…to ignore our humanness.
This ceremony is an invitation to try something different…to slow down, to listen and remember who you have always been before you learned all the pushing through, the performing and trying to be perfect.
Let's remember together.
The Medicine
And it's not just poetic.
Unlike stronger plant medicines, cacao doesn't take you out of your body. It brings you deeper in. It works gently, with your emotions, with your nervous system and invites presence without overwhelm. It meets you exactly where you are.
In this circle, that gentleness creates something remarkable. Walls are able to come down. What you feel gets honored. Truth is spoken without judgment because when we sit in community, in a circle, we begin to see a part of ourselves in each other.
Many indigenous cultures have known this for thousands of years. Cacao is not just a drink. She is a living being with her own personality and wisdom. She can be a companion for healing and a plant spirit that helps us soften, listen and come home to ourselves.
What People Experience
Cacao opens the space to meet yourself with love and in my experience, that's where the real work, the real healing begins.
What to Expect
We gather, sit in sacred circle and slow down together.
You arrive, settle in, and are welcomed into a circle. We open sacred space together and you set an intention with the medicine for yourself, for this season of your life or for whatever is most alive for you right now.
You receive and drink raw ceremonial cacao. You'll feel it working — a gentle warmth spreading through your chest, a quiet lift in your energy, a soft opening that's hard to describe but impossible to miss.
We may move through some gentle somatic and body-based practices. We may open up for shares. Someone will say something and you'll think me too. I thought it was just me.
We close with a little time to integrate, to journal, or just simply breathe and be.
"In a culture where we have been conditioned to be independent, we have lost the ability to connect not only to each other but to the world and environment around us, denying a truth that we need each other, that all living things need each other to live, thrive, and also die, and complete this life with dignity."

Your Guide
I'm Erin Kinney. I'm a ceremonialist, embodiment teacher and psychosomatic healing guide.
I came to cacao almost 14 years ago during one of the hardest times in my life. I didn't know what I was walking into. What I found was a feeling of being home in myself that I hadn't realized I'd been missing. I kept coming back. And eventually I was called to train deeply in ceremony, energy work, somatic healing and what it actually means to hold space for someone.
The core of everything I do comes down to this: your body is not something to fix. It's a living, intelligent system that has been communicating with you all along. It holds a kind of wisdom that mirrors the intelligence of the natural world — the Earth, the seasons, all living systems. We were all taught to forget this truth.
This ceremony is one of the ways I help you find your way back.
"I can feel cacao's medicine just by talking about her. That's how real the relationship gets — and that's what I want to help you discover too."

Good Questions
No. Ceremonial cacao is not a psychedelic. It's a gentle plant medicine that works with the emotional body and the heart, helping facilitate clarity, emotional release and inner peace. You remain completely present and in control throughout.
Ceremonial cacao is made from heirloom cacao beans, minimally processed and sourced with intention and respect. It contains no added sugar or dairy and retains its full energetic and medicinal properties — very different from the cacao powder in your pantry.
Yes. Cacao ceremonies are safe for most people. However, if you have a heart condition or are taking certain medications — especially antidepressants — please consult your doctor before participating. When in doubt, reach out and we can talk it through.
Absolutely. You don't need any prior experience with ceremony or meditation. The cacao will meet you exactly where you are. That's one of the things I love most about this medicine.
Not at all. This ceremony is open to everyone regardless of beliefs. It's about personal connection and presence — nothing more, nothing less.
In moderate amounts, yes. Because of its theobromine content, large daily doses may not be suitable for everyone. As always, listen to your body and consult a professional if you're unsure.
In small amounts, ceremonial cacao is generally considered safe during pregnancy. That said, please consult your healthcare provider before participating — everyone's situation is different.
Comfortable clothing you can relax in and maybe layers in case you get cold easily. You're also welcome to bring a journal, a bottle of water, and a personal object for the altar — something meaningful to you. You will also want to bring something to sit on such as a zafu pillow or back jack depending on what you need for support. I do have some extra cushions and a few back jacks available if you need.
Yes — I offer private and group ceremonies for retreats, corporate gatherings and special events. Reach out at erin@erin-kinney.com and we can talk about what would work for your group.
I would be delighted to sit in circle with you.
